Frequently Asked Questions
Who is HypnoBirthing® suitable for?
HypnoBirthing can be taught to any mother-to-be whether
expecting your first or last baby. Any mother who wants
to know how to do it differently from their previous experience,
or mums with a clear idea of how they want to give birth,
or mothers and partners who are frightened by the prospect
of following in their mother's or their friend's footsteps.
We've all heard the 'horror' stories, but now with HypnoBirthing® you
can put all that behind you and experience birth peacefully.
Back to top Can I be Hypnotised?
Yes, if you want to be. Hypnosis is a naturally induced
state of relaxed concentration that we all experience many
times a day without realising it. You do not feel 'out
of it' and can even choose to respond to
people
if
you
wish
to.
Back to top What will I feel?
You will feel calm and relaxed, in control and aware of
your body's contractions. Your body's natural anaesthesia
(endorphins) will replace the stress hormones that cause
pain.
Like any childbirth preparation class, the success
of the techniques is related to the amount of practice
you put in.
As a guide, we find that around 65-70% of HypnoBirthing® mums
don't need any form of pain relief. Nearly all the mums
in this category simply don't experience any pain - just
pressure.
Around a further 20-25% only require something mild, like
gas and air.
The remaining 5-10% usually fall into what we call 'special
circumstances', where medical intervention is required.
However, the HypnoBirthing® mums still tell us that
HypnoBirthing® really helped - even if they were induced,
or had a caesarean.
Remember - the aim of HypnoBirthing® is to have a
calmer, easier, more comfortable birth, where you feel
secure and are in control.
Back to top When should I start classes?
It is really a case of the earlier the better, so any
time after 20 weeks pregnancy. This doesn't mean that it
won't work if you start later, just that you will have
less time to practice and reap the benefits of really deep,
regular relaxation during the last few months of pregnancy.
If you are unsure, please contact me to discuss the options
as I may be able to run an 'intensive' class over a single
weekend.
Back to top Does my partner/husband have to attend the classes?
Yes. If he is going to be present and assisting you during
the birth, he should attend all the classes. There is a
lot for him to learn too and he will be an important player
and supporter.
However, if your partner/husband cannot attend all the
classes and/or help you practice or attend the birth, your
mother, sister or friend can also be your birthing companion.
Whoever you choose (and we strongly recommend it's the
father if at all possible, as it helps build a strong relationship
with the child), they must attend all the classes and the
birth.
